Why You’re Not the Go-To Expert (Yet) - and How to Ditch Doubt for Good

Stop hiding in plain sight — it’s time to step into your authority and finally OWN your expert zone.

Welcome Note:
If you're a coach, consultant or expert who's tired of feeling like a best-kept secret... you're not alone. You know you have the skills. You know you could be helping more people at a higher level. But for some reason, you're not showing up as that person yet — the go-to, seen, trusted expert. This post is here to help you change that.

Is This You? The Hidden Gem Coach

Tell me if this sounds familiar:

You’ve worked hard, built your career, gained experience and knowledge (probably across multiple industries or roles), and when someone needs help — you’re the person they call.

But when it’s time to show up as the expert — whether introducing yourself confidently at a networking event or writing your Instagram bio — you shrink. You find yourself second-guessing, downplaying, or overexplaining... and leaving people more confused than convinced.

I get it. That was me, too.

Back when I first started my business, I’d dread those events. As soon as someone asked, “So, what do you do?”, I’d launch into a waffly explanation that made total sense to me but didn’t land at all. I could practically see their eyes glaze over. Not exactly magnetic.

In truth, I did have a valuable skill set. But the way I communicated it? Let’s just say I was hiding in plain sight — and it showed.

Why We Hide From Our Own Authority

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: your brain is wired to play small.

Seriously. Many of us (especially if you’re from Australia, New Zealand, or the UK — yes, I see you!) grew up marinated in tall poppy syndrome. That ingrained cultural idea that it’s dangerous to stand out. That if you claim your brilliance, someone will cut you down.

No wonder your nervous system hits the brakes when it’s time to post with confidence or claim your space online.

Add to that the typical high-achiever mindset, and you’ve got a recipe for self-sabotage:

  • “I need more experience before I can call myself an expert.”
  • “What if I choose the wrong niche and box myself in?”
  • “Who am I to speak out when I’m still figuring things out?”

Meanwhile, you watch others — many with far less knowledge — racking up clients and opportunities. Not because they’re more qualified, but because they chose to own it.

The Real Problem: You’re Not Clear — So Neither Is Anyone Else

If you’re not attracting premium clients, it’s probably not because your captions aren’t clever enough or you haven’t figured out the algorithm. I tried all that too.

The truth? Without clarity, even the best marketing strategies fall flat.

The difference between being overlooked and in-demand often comes down to one thing: specific, visible, confidently communicated clarity about what you do, who it’s for, and the result you deliver.

But clarity doesn’t come easy when you’re multi-skilled. If you’ve had a rich career, trying to narrow down can feel like cutting off limbs. Listing everything leads to confusion. Generalising makes you forgettable.

To make it worse, there’s the Dunning-Kruger effect: the more you actually know, the more you realise what you don’t know. So you second-guess yourself while others with half your experience boldly take the stage.

Yep — ouch.

The Confidence Myth (And the Nerve to Decide)

Here’s the thing that changes everything:

You don’t become an expert by waiting. You become one by deciding.

The Simon Sineks and Tony Robbinses of the world? They didn’t wait to be invited to the table. They chose a message, claimed their space, and started showing up as if they were the go-to. The world caught up later.

Confidence isn’t a prerequisite. It’s a result of consistent action — anchored in clarity.

There’s no gatekeeper handing out “expert” badges. No course that finally makes it official. You get to decide. That’s both the scary part — and the empowering part.

How to Find — and Own — Your Expert Zone

So, how do you get clear? How do you figure out your specialist space?

Here’s my favourite process. I call it your Expert Zone — and it’s where three powerful elements intersect:

  • Your skills and lived experience (yes, all those years count!)
  • The results you deliver best (think transformation, not tasks)
  • A clear audience who values and wants that result (and will pay for it)

That overlap? That’s your magnetic sweet spot.

When I guide my clients to uncover their Expert Zone, everything shifts. Their words start landing. Their confidence skyrockets. Their offers become crystal clear. And the premium clients? They start showing up — because now they see the value.
